They are constructed from a 5-ply Orca Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM) coated fabric that is specifically manufactured to resist scratches and UV damage, while retaining its remarkable durability. Almost all inflatable rafts -and even boats nowadays; are constructed with either cutting edge and revolutionary renewed PVC or as we strongly recommand the Military strenght CSM/Hypalon fabric. Hypalon was discontinued by its manufacturer (DuPont) and is now sold under its slightly different formula and new name "CSM" or Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene Rubber.
Though also note that the YouAre more simplified lake- and swimming raft as a more afforadble option is also offered and made with PVC (Heytex GmbH* and Mehler GmbH, Mehler-Valmex® PVC from Germany, also not to be compaired to Korean PVC with all it's disadvantages and weaknesses); While the true military top standards from Penel&Flipo (Orca) material designrs, Orca® CSM (Hypalon) from Belgium offers the best possible solution!

Best one for a outstanding good price is the Gibsun SML 48; it is also very good for salt water (very important)
Even though the ORCA CSM nautical platform is double work with drop-stitch calibration and also double work with gluing even the extra line to be symmetric (with one line aside it looks funny) plus taping on the inside; you should know, that the CSM platform production time in general is double time compared to PVC since we have to sand all gluing parts as well (plus in our situation with the reinforced taping on the inside even 4x sides of fabrics for each gluing connection) and it takes more time to glue since the glue is totally different.
This is also the exact reason why any other PVC fabric is known to be significantly less expensive then CSM.

PVC is also quite strong and can come in different thicknesses such as .09mm & 1.2mm, but this still does not change the fact that it does not repel the sunlight as great as CSM. It can definitely be kept in great shape and might perhaps last just as long if well maintained and if no leaks are caused by stones or sharp shells on shore; no fuel or oil is spilled, you didn't forget to stow away instead of letting the raft left in the sun for a very long time, e.g. PVC Pros & Cons Pro: Significantly less expensive Con: Not as UV resistant |
CSM on the other hand is more expensive overall to be handeled as well but will last much longer and is excellent against sun exposure & tolerant on fuel spills or fumes. CSM is simply longer lasting, more expensive during the manufacturing process though has a high tolerance through a variety of environments or different weather as well. SUMMARY
In general PVC fabric won't last as long as CSM fabric if the raft- or boat will be subjected to prolonged periods of direct sunlight and no measures have been taken to protect the PVC fabric from the sun (raft-; boat cover or UV Protectant). In many ways these fabrics are very similar: modern technology and improvements of PVC are minimizing the difference. The most important differences are : TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE. It makes CSM very preferable in hot climate areas. PVC is also very useful there, but you have to be more careful to your raft. In medium and cold climate areas this difference is much smaller. PVC is more sensitive to UV radiation than CSM. But now the special chemical additives in PVC have nearly solved the problem on that particular area, you still will be way better off with the right choise for materials in the right environment.
